Evaluating the Areas of Concern Around the Eyes

Examining the eye region will help identify the area which need to be corrected.  The area can be the upper eyelid, the lower eyelid, or both.   In addition, testing the tone of the lower lid will dictate whether a lid tightening procedure will be needed.  (The surgeon will also check to see if there is a medical condition that might be associated with the areas of concern around the eyes.)

Marking the Incisions and Removing the Excess Eyelid Tissue

The skin around the upper and lower eyelid region are marked.  The excess skin is identified and then carefully removed.  (A conservative approach to the removal of the lower eyelid skin is performed to prevent the development of an ectropion.)

Removing the Excess Fat Around the Eyes

There are three fat compartments in the lower eyelid and two compartments in the upper eyelids.  Careful identification of these fat compartments are performed and the excess fat in the compartments are removed.

Closure of the Incisions

The incisions of the upper and lower eyelids are carefully closed.  A choice between dissolvable vs. non-dissolvable sutures will be made by the surgeon.
